Yesterday, Anne sent an Open Letter to the UK Government’s Ministers for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport, and Disabilities, requesting an urgent meeting to discuss the state of Changing Places in UK sports venues.
Anne said:
“I’m supporting the Rise for Sport campaign because, as an athlete and as a person with a disability, I know what exclusion means. Nobody ever wants to be excluded. If people embraced the Changing Places campaign, it would really make a big difference to the people who need them.”
In her letter to the Ministers, Anne highlights her experiences both as an athlete and as a disabled person, saying,
“I’ve heard from sports fans about the difference it makes to their lives when the club or team they support has a Changing Places Toilet at their venue. It makes it possible for them to watch their favourite sport live and feel the excitement of being a part of that sporting family. Without these facilities, risking visiting a sports stadium can be a humiliating experience.
Sport is such an important part of society; it has played a huge role in my life, and it is saddening that disabled people face barriers to access, as inhumane as not having access to a toilet facility – both as participants and supporters.”
Live sporting events bring communities together — as participants, as spectators, and simply as members of a wider group. We believe that everybody, regardless of their disability, has the right to join in safely and with dignity.
It’s not too much to ask.
