Rachel Bury, #RiseForSport Ambassador

Rachel Bury

Avid Manchester United supporter and national Boccia player Rachel Bury, 35, was diagnosed with cerebral palsy spastic quadriplegia at 10 months old. Today, she uses a wheelchair to get around and relies on family and carers to help with day-to-day activities. However, a lack of Changing Places Toilets at venues across the UK means she’s sometimes forced to limit the amount she drinks or cancel her plans altogether, simply because there’s nowhere to meet her basic personal needs. Here, Rachel gives an insight into why the #RiseforSport campaign is so close to her heart:

I try not to let my disability impact on what I do day-to-day. I love sport, both as a fan and as a participant and I participate in Boccia – an indoor sport similar to bowls – and in the past, I have competed at England level.

I’m also an avid Manchester United supporter and season ticket holder and have gone to games with my dad for more than 25 years. Luckily, Old Trafford does have Changing Places Toilets available but, over the last couple of years as my condition has deteriorated, I’ve come to realise just how important they are – and why there needs to be more around the country.

On occasion, if I’ve wanted to attend an event and there’s no Changing Places Toilet available at the venue, I’ve had to either limit the amount I drink to avoid having to go to the toilet, or I’ve had to cancel plans to go to the event altogether.

Knowing Changing Places Toilets are guaranteed to be available would make life exponentially better.

I’d be able to meet up with more disabled friends at sports events who aren’t as confident as me. I could tell them about the facilities and then they’d be more willing to come.

I could also increase my own independence by being able to use the facilities without needing support.

Somedays I feel very annoyed and vocal about the issue. Other days unfortunately, when I’m not feeling as strong or as confident, it has affected my mental health and my willingness to get out of the house and to make plans to do things.

Limiting my fluid intake – especially on warmer days – could have an impact on my physical health going forward and I shouldn’t need to do that just because I don’t want to go to the toilet.

A massive part of society has been left behind, especially after the promises made after the 2012 Olympics. It’s not just for people like myself who, when you see me it is obvious I have a disability, but for those with hidden disabilities who need Changing Places Toilets, too.

I’m urging everyone to sign the #RiseforSport petition as it’ll make such a difference for society. It’ll give disabled sports fans like me the same opportunities as everyone else and it doesn’t cost a penny in this current climate.

Please, just give us your backing.

Please sign our petition today, share it with your friends and family, and together we can all Rise for Sport.
